Reunited

about seven last night i was sitting in the lobby watching some world cup with hungarian students. i was hoping one would turn to me and say. -you are american arent you? i bet you would like some help here in this strange country of ours.- but of course no one did. as i was sitting there, stomach growling trying to will a student to talk to me and beginning to fear that i would need to make that dreaded first approach. no doubt to be rejected with blank stares and evil laughter. as i was sitting there pretending to watch the soccer game, it was Australia v. Italy by the by, i felt a tap on my shoulder. turned to see the reception desk lady standing there. what will she say to me, has she suddenly learned english? but no sooner does my eye met hers than she turns and points to the entrance. standing there, glowing with holy light are ron watson and two distinctly american students. ive always felt particularly awkward around ron, he is a man who is difficult to approach at school. but just then i felt like my best friend had stepped in the room. three of them in fact though i didnt even know the other guys names.

what is that saying about a chinaman on the moon? thats how it felt just then.

i dont know how they make their beds here. the bed is a good three inches shorter than i am, the sheets are about eight. figured i had no use for the comforter (considering even at 9 the temperature was in the 8ös) so i layed it down first to soften the mattress, then a layered the sheets to cover the length of the bed.

fell asleep at 94ö uncovered, in my underwear with a wet towel on my face, the periodic sirens outside offering a soothing ambience. the sun sets after ten and rises by five. im not sure how that works out astronomically... i managed to sleep until 73ö. despite everything i woke feeling particularly refreshed and optimistic.

dont think my phone works after all. and i forgot my shampoo (how?) so i used handsoap in the shower.

went looking for the shopping mall this morning with john and cameron (the other dudes here so far). john is a slyly funny but helpful 5th year ceramics major, just got in from the italy study abroad program. cameron is overspoken and humorously bumbling senior history major who keeps count on his fingers of how many time he bitches during the day and looks stunningly like that guy in swingers -youre so money- that guy.
here they are mid-bite-

amanda youd be happy to know that when we went to the grocery store today i kept up my tradition of buying cheap alcohol in europe with a bottle of beer for a stunning 59 forint (that is about 25 cents). ill let you know how it tastes. we also bought paprika flavored pringles and ketchup cheetos.

in a bit we are going to hit up the spa for a refreshing dip in the pools.

It's amazing how close you come to feel to almost strangers when you're abroad - just because you share the same culture.

Today in the Social Work building, I saw a hello poster from the graphic design show. Since the show is over, I took it! It's one of the pink snails and will probably adorn my room in the fall.
